How the Seeking Alpha PRO Quant Portfolio Works

Daily Quant Grading by Seeking Alpha Pro

Daily Quant Grading: The Quant system grades close to 5,000 stocks every trading day between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM Eastern Time. Each stock is scored on Valuation, Growth, Profitability, Momentum, and EPS Revisions relative to its sector.

Strong Buy Selection by Seeking Alpha Pro

Strong Buy Selection: Stocks that hold a Quant Strong Buy for a proprietary number of consecutive trading days become eligible, provided they trade daily and have no active M&A or delayed SEC filings. The model then narrows the field to 30 high-conviction stocks, with a sector cap to prevent concentration.

Weekly Rebalancing: Every Monday, the portfolio removes downgraded holdings, adds new Strong Buys, and resets all 30 positions to equal weight. Trades are published at 12:00 PM Eastern Time and priced at Monday's volume-weighted average price.

The Quant System Behind Seeking Alpha PRO

Steven Cress, Seeking Alpha's Head of Quantitative Strategy, describes the methodology as GARP Plus, meaning growth at a reasonable price with momentum and EPS revisions added.

A Quant Strong Buy must be collectively strong across all five factors, so the model is never purely momentum-driven or growth-driven.

Valuation: Compares multiples such as forward P/E, PEG, EV/EBITDA, and price-to-sales against the sector. Stocks the model considers too expensive cannot enter the PRO Quant Portfolio.

Growth: Measures year-over-year and forward growth in revenue, EBITDA, EPS, and levered free cash flow. Forward figures come from Wall Street consensus estimates.

Profitability: Covers gross and net income margins, return on equity, return on capital, and cash from operations.

Momentum: Grades 3, 6, 9, and 12-month share price performance relative to the sector.

EPS Revisions: Counts how many Wall Street analysts have raised or lowered earnings estimates over the past 90 days, for both the fiscal year and the upcoming quarter.

Sector-Relative Grading

Each metric is graded A+ to F against the company's sector, and metrics with stronger backtested predictive power carry more weight, with momentum and valuation slightly favoured.

Ratings run from Strong Sell to Strong Buy on a 1 to 5 scale, with Strong Sells and Strong Buys issued in roughly equal numbers. Symbol pages show the daily rating history and factor grades from three and six months earlier.

Built-In Circuit Breakers

A Buy or Strong Buy reverts to Hold if Growth, Momentum, or EPS Revisions fall to D+ or lower, or Valuation or Profitability fall to D- or lower.

Ratings update daily between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM Eastern Time, never during market hours. Macro and geopolitical events count only once Wall Street analysts revise their estimates.

Seeking Alpha PRO Quant Portfolio

The PRO Quant Portfolio launched in June 2025 after a survey of Alpha Picks subscribers, roughly half of whom wanted Quant ideas more frequently.

It was co-founded by Steven Cress and Temi, a quantitative professional with a long career at S&P Global, with Senior Quant Strategist Emma Johnston also helping to manage it.

Portfolio Construction

Holdings - The portfolio holds 30 stocks and resets every position to equal weight at each rebalance.
Universe - US-listed stocks and ADRs from around the world qualify, with no market cap restrictions.
Share Price - There is no minimum share price, although stocks priced above $10,000 are excluded.
Sector Limits - A proprietary cap moves new buys to the next best stock in another sector once one sector grows too large.
Benchmark - Performance is measured against the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index (RSP), since the portfolio is also equally weighted.

Buy and Sell Rules

Buy Requirements
A stock must hold a Quant Strong Buy rating for a proprietary number of consecutive trading days, trade daily, and have at least one Wall Street analyst covering it. Companies involved in active M&A or with delayed SEC filings are excluded.

Sell or Strong Sell
A downgrade to Sell or Strong Sell triggers same-day removal and an alert. Losing the Quant Rating altogether is treated in the same way.

Downgrade to Hold
Stocks slipping to Hold are removed at the next Monday rebalance rather than immediately. Backtesting showed this approach delivered the best balance of responsiveness and practicality.

Other Triggers
Breached M&A thresholds, a delayed SEC filing, or a share price above $10,000 also lead to removal.

Mid-Week Cash
Proceeds from a mid-week sale stay in cash until the following Monday. The portfolio can therefore briefly hold 28 or 29 stocks before returning to 30.

Performance and Methodology

Returns
Between June 2, 2025 and October 21, 2026, the PRO Quant Portfolio returned +47.09% against +25.79% for the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index.

Backtesting
The strategy was backtested from 2015 using S&P Global data, with turnover averaging two to three trades per week.

Trade Pricing
Buys and sells are priced at Monday's volume-weighted average price (VWAP), so updated prices and weights appear on Tuesday morning.

Return Calculation
Dividends are reinvested, and returns are time-weighted in line with the GIPS standard to neutralise external cash flows.

Model Portfolio Only
The portfolio is not run with real money and is not an audited GIPS-compliant product. It publishes weights rather than share quantities, so subscribers size positions and place trades through their own broker.

Designed for All Types of Investors

PRO for Active Investors

Active investors can follow the PRO Quant Portfolio trade by trade, with an average of two to three changes each week. Because turnover is weekly, the strategy suits investors comfortable with regular trading and its tax implications in taxable accounts.

PRO for Investment Professionals

RIAs, analysts, and financial planners can use PRO for institutional-grade research, screening, and the PRO Quant Portfolio. Hedge funds, banks, and financial firms can use it to track analyst sentiment and monitor shifts in Quant Ratings.

PRO for Short Sellers and Hedgers

Short Ideas gives investors running short positions access to well-argued Sell theses from vetted analysts. Paired with the downgrades feed, it supports risk management on existing long positions.

Please Note

PRO is a separate subscription and does not include Alpha Picks.
The PRO Quant Portfolio is a model portfolio and does not execute trades.
No ETF, fund, or automated service replicates the PRO Quant Portfolio.
Weekly rebalancing creates frequent taxable events in taxable brokerage accounts.
Strong Buy streak lengths and factor weights remain proprietary and undisclosed

How to Use Seeking Alpha PRO

Open the PRO Quant Portfolio
Select PRO Quant Portfolio from the left-hand menu. The Portfolio tab lists all 30 current holdings with pick date, entry price, weight, sector, Quant rating, and return against the S&P 500.
Choose How Closely to Follow
Buy all 30 stocks and rebalance to equal weight each Monday to mirror published performance. Alternatively, sort by Quant score and select a handful of the highest-rated names, since not all Strong Buys are equally strong.
Read the Weekly Rebalance Article
Trade updates are published in the Analysis tab at 12:00 PM Eastern Time every Monday and sent by email a few minutes later. Each article covers new buys and sells, plus a synopsis of sector moves and the macro backdrop.
Scale In With Limit Orders
Most holdings carry over each week, so positions can be built gradually without waiting for Monday. For companies under $500 million in market cap, staggered limit orders help avoid chasing price spikes, such as buying 25 shares a day toward a 100-share position.
Review Top Analyst Ideas
Open Top Analyst Ideas from the PRO menu and filter by success rate, average return, sector, and market cap. Save any filter combination as a custom screen, which then appears at the top of the list.
Check Upgrades & Downgrades
Set the time frame to the last day, the source to Quant, and the direction to upgrades. Treat each result as a research starting point and review the symbol page or Key Stats Comparison before acting.
Scan Exclusive Coverage and Short Ideas
Use Exclusive Coverage to find Buy-rated companies that Wall Street does not cover. Use Short Ideas for well-argued Sell theses when hedging or reducing exposure.
Build Screens With Ask Seeking Alpha
Open Ask Seeking Alpha from the search bar and type a plain English request, such as robotics companies with revenue growth above 10%. Select Edit Screener to refine and save the result in the full Stock Screener.
Set Portfolio Alerts
Click Manage Alerts at the top right of any portfolio to receive analysis, rating, and news notifications on every holding. Rating alerts flag a downgrade as soon as the Quant model updates.
Attend the PQP Webinars
The Quant team hosts PRO Quant Portfolio webinars every two weeks on Tuesdays. Each session reviews recent additions, sales, and the best and worst performers over the prior four weeks, with replays stored on the platform.
